grief: more than we think it is

Updated: Jul 26, 2023

Grief is a natural and powerful emotion that we often associate with the loss of a loved one, and indeed, it's a common experience. However, grief can extend far beyond death, encompassing a myriad of losses we encounter throughout life.

From the end of a relationship to the departure of a full house when children leave the nest, the depth of grief knows no bounds. In this blog, we explore the diverse aspects of grief, shedding light on the many situations that can trigger this profound emotional response.

While the passing of a loved one is the most recognized form of grief, we must remember that it doesn't solely define this complex emotion. People can grieve the dissolution of a marriage, the loss of a close friendship, or the breakdown of family bonds. Career changes, relocations, and shifts in lifestyles can also trigger a grieving process. Each unique circumstance can lead to feelings of loss and change that deserve recognition and understanding.

Griefrecoverymethod.com defines grief as

"Grief is the normal and natural emotional reaction to loss or change of any kind. Of itself, grief is neither a pathological condition or a psychological disorder."

I enjoy this definition for mainly two purposes:

  • It acknowledges that grief can be felt for losses other than deaths

  • & that feeling grief is not weird. It is not a personality disorder. There is nothing wrong with feeling grief. IT IS NORMAL TO GRIEVE!

There is nothing odd or abnormal about experiencing grief; it is a testament to our human experience. Recognizing and accepting our emotions is the first step towards healing.

While grief itself is natural, how we handle it determines its impact on our lives. It's essential to explore healthy ways to grieve, as suppressing or denying our emotions can be detrimental in the long run. In upcoming posts, we'll delve into constructive methods of coping with grief and also highlight signs of negative grieving patterns.

Let's break free from the narrow confines of grief and embrace its diverse manifestations. As we journey together, we'll learn that grieving is a shared human experience, uniting us in our vulnerability and strength. Stay tuned to discover ways to navigate grief positively, fostering healing, growth, and resilience.
