how we cope with grief: the good and bad

Grief is a journey filled with tender emotions and healing steps, and I believe that we can navigate it with love and care, discovering ways to bring warmth to our hearts. 💕

Zach Bryan sings these lyrics from his song Fifth of May:

"Getting highs easy, getting drunks fine. It's the getting by that'll get a soul down"

And I mean- it's so true. It's so much easier to suppress our feelings with alcohol, weed, pills, sex, whatever your pleasure is. It's much easier than confronting our feelings and realities. It's essential to find healthier ways to cope and embrace the healing process.


When my brother passed away, I found myself seeking solace in drinking and partying, but I realized that numbing the pain wasn't the answer. Instead, I chose to be self-aware of my actions, feelings, and behaviors, leading to meaningful progress in my healing journey.


So, what are coping mechanisms? They're like tools we use to face life's ups and downs. Some may not be so healthy, such as substance abuse, risky behavior, or isolating ourselves. Engaging in these negative coping strategies may provide temporary relief, but they can harm our well-being in the long run. 🚫😔

However, there are countless positive and constructive coping options to explore! 🌷🌈


Let's discover effective ways to heal our hearts:

  • Embrace physical activities to release endorphins and ease stress. Whether it's dancing, yoga, or going for a walk, movement can be incredibly therapeutic. 🏃‍♀️🌞

  • Write in a journal to express your emotions and thoughts. Journaling can provide clarity and serve as a comforting outlet. 📝✨

  • Surround yourself with supportive individuals, connecting with loved ones and those experiencing similar journeys. Building a sense of belonging can be incredibly empowering. 🤗💖
